Wildfire Los Angeles

Notice of Public Meeting for July 20, 2023

The “MySafe:LA Los Angeles County Fire Safe Council” will conduct a virtual meeting on wildfire preparedness on July 20, 2023, commencing at 7:00 PM (Pacific) and concluding (estimate) at 8:30PM (Pacific).

Our feature presentation will focus on GET READY. Hear from our special guest, Los Angeles City Fire Captain Rico Gross, the commander of the LAFD’s Disaster Preparedness Unit. Afterwards, MySafe:LA will discuss key issues impacting the issues related to making your home, family, and pets READY for the next wildfire. Captain Gross will be joined by MySafe:LA Wildfire Coordinator Carl Ginsberg, who is also an LAFD CERT Coordinator and EMR.

Our June presentation went so long we were unable to cover our history of wildfire. As such, it’s a feature of this month’s virtual town hall. The Sayre Fire, also known as the Sylmar Fire, was a November 2008 wildfire that resulted in the loss of 489 residences in Los Angeles. It caused the “worst loss of homes due to fire” in the city’s history. The fire was first reported at 10:29 p.m. PDT on November 14, 2008, in the Sylmar section of Los Angeles. As of November 20, 2008, the fire destroyed more than 600 structures (480 mobile homes, nine single-family homes, 104 outbuildings and 10 commercial buildings). The number of homes lost in the Sayre fire exceeded the prior record set in 1961 by the Bel Air Fire which claimed 484 homes. We expect to have survivors and firefighters who were there discuss the fire.

MySafe:LA hosts a virtual town hall every month, except for January, on the third Thursday, beginning at 7PM. You may also subscribe to our previous town hall recordings via our podcast, available via the wildfirela.org website.
