NFPA's Firewise USA initiative

It’s about more than insurance

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) manages a national initiative called Firewise USA. This is an important framework that assists groups of residents in a neighborhood to collaborate on efforts to reduce wildfire risk – both through education and specific actions. Key to this are steps related to home hardening and defensible space.

The Firewise USA initiative has multiple benefits, including but not limited to:

  • Helps residents better protect their homes and properties
  • Potential qualifications for certain types of insurance discounts
  • Create a “community” effort related to reducing wildfire risk
  • Voluntary participation
There are other benefits as well, the most obvious being that if you participate, you’ll reduce the risk of losing your home to a wildfire.

What about Fire Safe Councils?

The NFPA’s Firewise USA program isn’t exclusive – the California Fire Safe Council is also useful and important, but has some different requirements. To learn about becoming a Fire Safe Council, visit this page.
