Let's Rebuild:LA

One of the most heartening signs of resilience is seeing how a community comes together after a disaster. MySafe:LA’s main mission is all about disaster prevention, mitigation, and recovery. Even though we don’t get involved in construction, land planning, or policy-making, we’re dedicated to helping communities bounce back and thrive after devastating wildfires, earthquakes, floods, or other challenges that affect everyone’s lives. 

Supporting Low-Income and Vulnerable Communities

There are residents living in parts of the city that face significant risks from fires, floods, earthquakes, and other disasters. Even in the more well-known areas, many people have owned their homes for 40 or more years and are now retired, often lacking the resources to make necessary changes to their surroundings. MySafe:LA is engaged and ready to support these vulnerable communities through workshops, helpful guides, online resources, and various activities. We’re working to expand awareness of services for seniors and disabled individuals, provide evacuation logistics support, and offer resources for those in need.

Our Rebuild:LA initiatives are more than just helping displaced families find a safe place to live again. We’re dedicated to creating positive change that can help lower the risks from future wildfires and other community disasters, making our neighborhoods safer and stronger for everyone. 

The Rebuild:LA Campaign

We’re dedicated to building a stronger, more resilient Los Angeles. To achieve this, we offer a variety of program components designed to engage, inspire, and motivate individuals to take positive action—sometimes with our support—to help everyone feel more prepared and at peace. These components include:

1. Workshops on "Rebuilding Best Practices"

If your home was damaged or destroyed by a wildfire, finding the original plans isn’t always the easiest or most helpful step. We’re here to support groups of homeowners in exploring the best practices for rebuilding. WE cover the critical issues related to Home Hardening, Defensible Space, and Evacuation. Collaborating with experts like architects, land and vegetation specialists, and local officials is so important. Our workshops are designed to give you a solid foundation and answer your questions, so you feel more confident as you take the next steps. 

2. Creating "Ready for Wildfire" Communities

Our specialists promote neighborhood groups rebuilding after fires to form Fire Safe Councils or Firewise USA designations—unlocking access to grants, insurance discounts, volunteer support, and alignment with California Fire Safe Council and NFPA frameworks. This work includes having MySafe:LA develop wildfire threat assessments, home wildfire preparedness inspections, council training, and guidance through the certification process. We stay involved once your neighborhood is engaged.

3. Fire Safety Inspections for Existing Structures

Our specialists will visit homes via coordinated “canvassing” operations, looking for several key fire risks, and installing FREE 10-year sealed smoke alarms and CO detectors. We’ll provide you with the materials to create an escape plan, have a functional GO-Bag, understand “Ready, Set, Go” steps, as well as guidance on assisting family members and pets in the event you need to evacuate from your home.

4. Advocacy for Smart Urban Planning and Regulatory Reform

We are actively collaborating with county and state agencies to make sure rebuilding rules encourage safer placement, discourage rebuilding in high-risk areas, and support consolidated rebuilding efforts in safer spots. We’re also committed to promoting an inclusive rebuild plan that goes beyond quick fixes, aiming for more sustainable, densely packed, and resilient housing options. This approach helps support housing equity and adaptable infrastructure near downtown or low-risk zones. Our efforts involve working closely not just with local officials but also with State Legislature members, Federal partners, and other key stakeholders.

5. Community Education

MySafe:LA is deeply committed to supporting community recovery after wildfire events through a strong emphasis on education and engagement. We deliver accessible, practical wildfire readiness resources using a variety of platforms, including our Rebuild:LA podcasts, virtual town hall meetings, and interactive wildfire safety workshops and fairs. These programs provide residents with the knowledge and confidence to create defensible space, harden their homes, and prepare their families for potential evacuation. This coordinated approach helps foster a culture of shared responsibility, building stronger, safer neighborhoods capable of withstanding and recovering from the growing threat of wildfires.

Register to be a Recovery Volunteer

We’re glad you’re here! We’d like to hear from you if you’d be interested in volunteering to help recovery efforts following the tragic series of wildfires that affected Los Angeles. Volunteers will only be used for recovery once fire dangers are resolved. By registering, you are permitting us to ask if you’d be interested in supporting the recovery effort. There is no guarantee that your name will be called. If we do call your name, you are under no obligation to volunteer and may decline or accept any offer.

Say Thanks to Firefighters, Police, and Other Responders!

Please add your name and message to the firefighters who responded to the wildfires in Los Angeles in January 2025. Let them know how much you appreciate their sacrifices to attack the unparalleled wildfires that destroyed thousands of homes. This was a “once-in-a-century” wind and wildfire storm, and these brave men and women deserve to hear from us.
